Access points

An Access point is required to connect PC's with wireless cards to an existing LAN. An Access point is like a transciever (transmitter-reciever)that translates between wireless network traffic and wired network traffic, acting as a gateway between the two. Access points provide a central base for your wireless network much the same as a switch / hub on a wired network.

Wireless access points, referred to as WAPs or Wireless APs, are wireless LAN transceivers that connect a wired LAN to one or more wired devices. Some Wireless APs also provide bridging, gateway and router functions.

Access points used in home or small business networks are generally small, dedicated hardware devices featuring a built-in network adapter, antenna, and radio transmitter. Access points support Wi-Fi wireless communication standards.
